Should a poet place herself in the historical context of a poem she's writing and use the right
words as if she were writing in the 13th century? Ths question preoccupied me while writing
a poem in the context of medieval times. In those times, the emotions were situated in the liver
while the heart was the seat of the mind. I was referring to the emotions as they were filtered
through the mind but according to medieval logic, I had to include the passions and emotions
as they were would have been expressed in medieval times and use the right words for them
in the context of those times. I, therefore, came to the conclusion that the use of the right
words in poetry are contextual and contingent to the spirit of the times.
